Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University

The institute has its home in a rebuilt building which was built in the Soviet Union style and completed in the 1950s. Lies in the Reservation Zone of Historical Constructions to the northeast of Weiming Lake, it requires to feature itself as a part of Langrun Garden, a traditional garden built in Qing Dynasty. A two-story massing is added to the west of the existing three-story structure, while creates a quadrangle north of it. Both of them are designed strictly in a language sympathetic to the traditional Chinese architectural vocabulary. Intricate detailing and ornament create a building which echoes the past, while featuring all of the functional spaces for advanced technology research.
